Studying while Parenting: A Reflection

Today marks two years since I graduated from the university. Reflecting on my study journey, I enrolled at the City University of Mogadishu in mid-2014. I selected political science as my preferred field of study at the University. Before I started the first semester, I studied the English language as it was a requirement for everyone. I completed the English course in one year.

During the first summer, while the university was closed, and before I started the first semester, I got married. Most of my relatives, friends, and classmates thought my ambition to study was over. When the new academic year of the university started, I  continued my study journey.

Most of my friends and relatives were surprised by my return to the university but still thought it would end after a few months. But I challenged their thinking and completed the university. We had our graduation ceremony exactly two years ago today, 4 July 2019.

Two years after the completion of my first degree, I am sharing inspirations and the challenges I faced during four years of study while parenting two kids.

There are lots of individuals that inspired me to continue my study. First, my mother played a major role in my studies. She used to motivate me to continue studying. She didn't only motivate me through words but also used to keep the children for me while I am away at the university. I am glad that I am a daughter of such a strong and inspiring mother. Second, my husband had a vital role in my study journey. He always used to inspire me to endure my studies. He was helpful to me and supported me selflessly. My teachers, siblings, and classmates had continuously inspired me too.

I had encountered many challenges during my study. First, the depressing words from the people were a challenge. When people knew that I am continuing my study, they used to laugh and say nonsense words. Apart from what people believe about me, I was personally confident, committed to my study and I was as hardworking as my classmates if not better. People mostly showed their meanness at the beginning of my journey. After two years of study, those who used to discourage me felt that I am not quitting, and balancing family and study became a normal thing for me.

Second, I used to face difficulties during my pregnancy periods. Though the first months of pregnancy are usually difficult for women to become active, I used to come to the class on normal days, study and participate in-class activities. Moreover, classmates and students at the university were able to recognize me without asking or knowing about my marriage. I used to manage the lessons I missed during my labor. I remember one day it was at the end of a semester and exams started while I was in labor for two weeks. I didn't hesitate to take that exam. I had finally completed my study and in the graduation ceremony, I was among the best seven students who were awarded for writing the best graduation thesis.

My journey of studying and being a wife and a mother of two kids was a challenging but rewarding experience for me. It was full of challenges, motivations, experiences, and skills. My mother, my husband, and many others have encouraged my decision to continue this journey while many others have challenged me. When there is willingness and determination, there are ways to achieve your goals. And I am glad with the grace of Allah, I was able to complete my study and celebrate it in style with family and friends.
